Craig Ballantyne of Turbulence Training wrote this guest article today... in fact, Craig said it was very controversial and made some folks mad at him! After you read this article... be sure to leave a comment or two what YOU think about it!
-- Matt --
The latest Men's Health magazine comes down on elliptical machines hard.
Now I know elliptical machines are often the only option for people with bad knees, but if your knees are healthy, think twice before using the elliptical machine for these three reasons.
First, on page 52 of the December, 2008 issue, Men's Health warns, "Never trust elliptical machines".
They quote a study that found elliptical machines over-estimated the number of calories burned in a workout by 31%!
Ouch.
So if your "elliptical cardio workout" burned 400 calories, the truth is you really burned closer to only 300 calories.
Second, later in the Dec. issue, Men's Health magazine interviewed Biggest Loser contestant Ed Brantley. Ed lost 73 pounds on the show, but had this to say about elliptical machines, "I hated the elliptical. It was too easy, I didn't feel like I was doing anything."
Exactly. I couldn't have said it better myself.
But that's EXACTLY why elliptical machines are so popular...
You see, the third reason elliptical machines are inferior for fat loss is because they fail my "human nature" test.
Put it this way...
Take 100 people and put them in a gym with 100 treadmills and 100 elliptical machines.
Tell them they have to exercise for 30 minutes at a hard pace, and they have the choice to use either the treadmill or the elliptical.
Guess where 90% of folks are going?
The elliptical!
Why?
Because it is human nature to take the EASY WAY out. And that is why elliptical machines are so busy at the gym and you rarely see anyone doing intervals on a treadmill or bodyweight circuits in the corner of the gym.
Often I see folks using the elliptical machine only to say they "worked out", but without getting any REAL work done.
So if you are stuck at a fat loss plateau, and you've been counting on the elliptical machine to help you out, then forget it.
To burn fat and get more out of your workouts, do interval training outside, on a bike or treadmill, or with kettlebell exercises or bodyweight circuits.

These are all better options in your fight against the fat,

Can You Get Fat From Fruit - Question Answered by Tom Venuto of Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle
I have been wondering about this very subject lately and then PRESTO! I get an email from Tom Venuto answering the question...
Now for those of you who aren't familiar with Tom Venuto... he is a competitive bodybuilder who just hit the big 40 and is also the author of Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle. I find him an authority on nutrition and how to lose body fat. And he didn't disappoint me here...
So I posted it on my blog for my readers can read what he had to say about this subject and discuss at the end of the post. Don't forget to leave a comment at the end of this blog what you think...
================
Is fruit making you fat? The FINAL word on fructose and fat loss
Does fruit make you fat? Are bodybuilders right when they cut out fruit before competitions or is that unnecessary? These and other questions have been hotly debated for decades. Kevin Larrabee of the Fit Cast show puts this question to Tom Venuto, who puts everything in perspective and gives you the final word on fruit, fructose and fat loss...
--------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
--------------------------------------------
KEVIN LARRABEE: Well, let's jump right into the questions. The first one we have comes from Chris. He says, "I'm just curious, what are your thoughts about fructose? Should the average person avoid a lot of fruit? I tend to avoid starchy carbs altogether, instead focusing on lean protein, fruit and veggies, in addition to healthy fats. Should I be worried about the fructose stuff? I eat 3 to 5 pieces of fruit a day, and that includes apples, grapes, bananas, oranges and really whatever is on sale at the store."
TOM VENUTO: I saw this topic got stirred up again just a few weeks ago. There was a study published in June, and it got written up in The New York Times, about fructose getting converted into fat. And you know how good the media is at reporting scientific research. Right? [sarcasm]
KEVIN LARRABEE: Oh, it's great. It's fantastic. I go to The New York Times for all my nutrition information actually. [more sarcasm!]
TOM VENUTO: [laughs] Well, it was The Journal for the American Nutrition Society. The title, right off the bat, was really damning. It said, "Dietary Sugars Stimulate Fatty Acid Synthesis." Then The New York Times' article says, "Does Fructose Make You Fatter?" And everybody saw
that and they're like, "Oh, my God! Fruit turns into fat!"
To tell you the truth, having started in the bodybuilding world, I believed that too. That's what I was taught. I was taught that fruit turns to fat, and when you go on a contest diet, you have to cut the fruit out. So when I was just starting out in bodybuilding, in my first few contests, I cut the fruit out. And then I started to really analyze it and it didn't seem to make any sense to me, so I put the fruit back in. I didn't see one shred of difference.
If you really go and look at these studies, like this new one, they were talking about high fructose corn syrup, not whole fruit. We know that the fructose goes to preferentially restore the liver glycogen, and the liver has a limited storage capacity. Some of the studies suggest that about
50 grams of fructose before it starts to spill into fat, at least in the context of those studies.
But does anybody know how much 50 grams of fructose is? I mean, in terms of soda, or high fructose corn syrup, I don't think it's hard at all to get 50 grams. And in that study, they didn't give people whole fruit. They gave them a big liquid dose that had 85 grams of carbs in a 75% fructose solution. That's like 64 grams of fructose all at once. So there you have it. That's consistent with what you'd expect based on the research.
Now, if you look at whole fruit, everybody saw the headline and they thought, "Fruit equals fructose." But fruit and fructose aren't exactly the same thing. A lot of people think that all the sugars in fruit are fructose. But a typical piece of fruit has what? About 6-7 grams of fructose?
Maybe you'd get about 10 in a big banana, and some of the berries that are really high in fiber, have only 2-3 grams of fructose. So it would take almost an impossible-to-eat amount, especially if you're trying to stay in a calorie deficit, for that to cause any fat storage. And if you're
in a calorie deficit for the day anyway, should we really be worried about it?
KEVIN LARRABBE: Yeah.
TOM VENUTO: I think fruit is good for a fat loss diet. You could actually make an argument that you should include it because it's high in nutrients, it's high in fiber; it's high in water content, and we know that's a combination right there (high fiber, high water) that's good for reducing appetite and making you feel fuller. So maybe the pre-contest bodybuilder or the low carb dieter is going to pull back on fruit a little bit. But that's mainly a function of cutting down on everything across the board -- cutting down calories across the board and cutting down carbs across the board. Fruit is just too nutritionally valuable to get rid of.
KEVIN LARRABEE: Exactly. I think something that Craig Ballantyne said was that he's never had a client that got fat by eating fruit. They got fat by having breads, like pastries, junk food,
pizzas, things like that. You're not going to get fat by eating fruit. I think people are just focusing on the wrong things.
TOM VENUTO: Yeah. Absolutely. Eat your fruit.

7 Weight Loss Transformation Secrets -- How to Get the Most of the TT Contests
I asked Craig Ballantyne to contribute today's Post...
7 Weight Loss Transformation Secrets
By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
Turbulence Training
Millions of men and women want to lose weight because they are sick of their excess body fat and low energy levels. If that sounds like you, then you need to join the Turbulence Training weight loss transformation contest.
There's already been some powerful, emotional stories told in fitness magazines, and folks from all over the world are helping one another to finally change their bodies. Your weight loss transformation is going to be an amazing 12 weeks. So I thought this would be the best time to give you my Top 7 Transformation Tips to help you lose more weight in the next 12 weeks.
Here are my Top 7 Transformation Secrets that you can use to burn fat from all over your body with Turbulence Training.
Tip #1) Clean out the pantry
One of the biggest pitfalls in a weight loss program is added sugar and mindless snacking (especially between getting home from work and dinner).
Get rid of the junk. Toss it. Better the garbage can eats it than you do.
Tip #2) Stop doing slow boring cardio
Increase the intensity of your workouts and switch to interval training. And yes, even beginners can do interval training when using the metabolism- boosting short, burst workout system.
Tip # 3) Use professionally designed, structured workouts such as my Turbulence Training Workouts that have been featured in Men's Health magazine
You should be in and out of your short, burst workouts in less than 45 minutes, three times per week. On the other 4 days of the week, stay active, getting at least a 30-minute walk in each day.
Tip #4) Set up home gym with ball, bench, and adjustable dumbells
That's all you need. If you are feeling frisky, you can add a pull-up bar to
your home gym.
But to change your body, you only need a little bit of equipment at home. You don't need an expensive gym membership or one of those colossal home gyms, or even a pricey bowflex.
Your body doesn't discriminate on price. It simply responds to the turbulence training you put on your body, and you can do that on the cheap.
Tip #5) Use short, burst Bodyweight Circuits at home instead of using cardio machines.
Choose 3 lower body exercises and 3 upper body exercises. Alternate between upper and lower body bodyweight exercises. Watch my youtube video on circuit training for more details.
Tip #6) Plan, shop, and prepare your food
Finding the right nutrition program is CRITICAL to success, and so is planning. You can't out-train a bad diet, but you can out-plan bad habits. So invest 2 hours on the weekend to prepare as many of your fat burning meals as possible for the week ahead.
Tip #7) Get Social Support
This is the most important Weight Loss Secret that no one pays attention to.
But the bottom line is...you can't do this on your own.
You need support from others to stick to your workouts, to make the right diet choices day-in and day-out and to have someone prop you up when you are feeling down and also to "call you out" when you are feeling like cutting corners.
Get social support on your side today with help from Turbulence Training.
Put these 7 Secrets to use today and you can lose 14-30 pounds in 12 weeks just like our past Transformation Contest Winners. And please refer your friends to the contest. You'll be supporting them and helping them change their bodies & their lives.
I can't wait to hear about your results in the Turbulence Training transformation contest.

Find Out Why Bally the Dog Eats Better Than Most North Americans Do... By 9am...!
I interviewed Craig Ballantyne a month or so ago...
We were talking about his dog, Bally at one point and I remember one thing he said that got stuck in my mind...
Craig said, "My dog Bally probably eats more vegetables by 9am than most North Americans do all day!"
And the point of that was most folks are not eating enough raw vegetables and fresh fruit. Instead they are eating the typical western fare of refined sugar, breads and tran fats.
So here is a tip for you... start eating raw veggies. At first you may want to eat them with good quality salsa... but after a while you get used to it...
And now for a little confession... I actually found myself a little fat at the beginning of the summer...
So I decided to make some changes in my life... I'm 44 years old... I felt tired, I felt old and I felt out of control...
So I decided to make time for an exercise program and redesign my eating plans.
And there are a lot of good fat loss programs out there and I think it is a matter of preference... just stick to a good one and don't feel that you have to hop around to another fat loss program.
I tried out and really loved Turbulence Training by Craig Ballantyne. It is a well designed bodyweight training program that hits all the major muscle groups.
And besides, he also adds a common sense diet program that eliminates refined sugars and breads.
And you know... those two items are horrible for our bodies... they spike the blood sugar and your metabolism goes haywire.
And the summer is drawing to a close... isn't it time to take back control of your body?

P.S. Oh yeah, after two months... I lost 2.5 inches around my waist and my bodyfat went down from 17% to 9%!

Bodyweight Workout Exercises by Craig Ballantyne
Most guys don't give much thought to bodyweight workouts, but some of the toughest exercises I've ever done have used only my bodyweight. The two that come to mind immediately are the Pistol Squat and the 1-arm pushup. You have to be very strong and fit to do either of those exercises.
If those are too advanced for you, you can try 1-leg Squats (only going down half as far as the Pistol Squat) and Decline Pushups (elevating your feet on top of a second stair of a staircase).
There are also a lot of abdominal exercises you can do with only your bodyweight, and I don't just mean crunches. Better exercises include planks, side planks, mountain climbers, and cross-body mountain climbers. Those are all total body ab exercises and are not as hard on your low back as situps and crunches.
You don't need a cardio machine to burn calories. For years, my clients have been using bodyweight circuits for interval training. Most bodyweight exercises are the perfect hybrid of strength training and interval training, and unlike cardio machines, they don't put as much repetitive stress on your joints (from doing the same thing over and over again) and they help improve your athletic mobility. Bodyweight exercises and workouts are a much better way to train than with machines!

My Personal Message for Governor Sarah Palin... STOP Jogging! Instead do this...
This is NOT a political post... so please put away your banners... or please put away your daggers...
Governor Palin from Alaska has made a lot of news lately... and during my daily readings... I noticed this story about her daily runs of 9 miles.
WSJ Running Alaska with Governor Sarah Palin
Although she was pregnant and had to cut back... Governor Palin is trying to get back into running again... she is up to 3 miles a day now.
But my point is this... Why? As far as I can see... there is NO good benefits to long distance running or jogging!
Folks have DIED while or after jogging. James Fixx the Godfather of jogging in 1984 at the age of 52 during his daily run, Dennis Johnson, the former NBA great died last year at the age of 52 after jogging, and how about Skip Prosser? He was the coach of the Wake Forrest college basketball team... and he died after jogging last year at the age of 56.
And this one is personal... I used to work with this guy... he was in fantastic SHAPE man... he died while jogging a few years ago!
Have you compared the physiques of the marathoners and the sprinters in the Olympics over the summer?
BIG difference huh? The sprinters were muscular and ripped while the long distance runners were spindly and enemic looking...
What can we take away from this? Long and borring endurance running or even aerobics are NOT the answer to fat loss! Steady state cardio just trains the lungs to breathe over long distances... it doesn't nothing for the heart or for your muscles.
That is right! You heard it here first...
Instead... try to turn all of your cardio workouts into interval workouts...
That means you should speed up and the speed down your workouts. It gives your heart a workout (which cardio or jogging doesn't). It stimulates your body's hormonal system to boost your metabolism to burn more fat.
And besides... the best benefit of them all? You can do interval workouts in half the time... time that you can spend on your hobbies... your family...
Craig Ballantyne does this for us with his Turbulence Training program. It was designed for busy individuals who want to lose body fat without spending tons of time doing it.
So Governor Sarah Palin... my advice is to stop jogging and do sprints instead... you will live longer and your body will thank you for it.
You are invited to leave comments but know this... I will delete any posts that are political...

Dining Diet Tips -- How to Avoid Becoming a Casualty of 2000 Calorie Dinners!
The 1000 Calorie Diet Tip
If you eat at restaurants, it's easy to eat over 1500 or 2000 calories per meal. Yikes! That's a full day's worth of calories in one dinner...
Pre-dinner bread & butter -> 200 calories
Pre-dinner cocktail -> 150 calories
Appetizer -> This could be a 500-1500 calorie bomb on it's own!
Steak -> 300-500 calories
Potato -> 150-300 calories
Vegetable -> 100 calories
Dinner Drink -> 150 calories
Dessert - 300-750 calories
After Dinner Drink - 150
And that's only if you CONTROL yourself. If you go on a rampage, you could be looking at 2500 or even 3000 calories in one sitting. Those numbers are scary.
Fortunately, there are ways to avoid this dietary nightmare while dining out. Here are 5 rules to cut 1000 calories from your dining-out diet...
1) Plan ahead and avoid restaurants that offer huge portions.
2) Skip the bread. It won't stop you from eating your full meal anyways, so just send it back.
3) No booze or liquid calories of any type.
4) No potates. Stick to your protein and your vegetables.
5) Reward yourself with only the tiniest bit of dessert, if at all.
It's all about taking responsibility for your choices. And yes, choosing between the "Pain of discoipline or pain of regret". What's your choice?

How To Lose the Last 10 Pounds by Craig Ballantyne of TT
How To Lose the Last 10 Pounds
By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com
Here's some of the tips we used in our plan to help the 3 brothers lose that last ten pounds of fat in the last 10 days of the transformation that helped them get featured in Men's Fitness magazine with their ripped abs.
Here are the guidelines we've come up with to lose the last 10 pounds.
NOTE: The brothers were only going to follow these guidelines for 10-14 days. So if you choose to use this plan, don't follow it for more than 2 weeks.
That's the maximum time for this advanced plan. After that, ease up on the restrictions a bit - and enjoy your advanced fat loss physique you've attained.
Advanced Nutrition Tips
1) Start your day immediately with 2 cups of water, 3 fish oil caps, and 20g of lean protein, as part of your normal breakfast.
2) Eat 1 cup of broccoli at lunch and dinner (in addition to what you normally had planned).
3) Eat only protein, almonds, and raw vegetables between meals.
4) Eliminate all pasta, rice, potatoes, and carbohydrates from a bag or a box.
5) Don't go to bed full. Eat only a small protein snack in the evening to keep hunger at bay and to provide the body with protein before sleep.
6) Drink 6 cups of green tea per day (3 in AM, 3 after lunch)
Advanced Exercise Tips
1) Add 10 seconds to each interval
2) Add in some bodyweight circuits (10-20 minutes per day) done in the morning or evening (if you do your regular workout in the AM, do your bodyweight circuits after dinner; otherwise, do the bw circuits first thing in the AM, and then do your regular workout at lunch or later in the
afternoon or evening)
3) Add one set to the first superset you do in each workout.
Use these strict tips for no more than 2 weeks before returning to normal exercise guidelines and carbohydrate intake.
Train hard but train safe and you'll lose the last ten pounds.

Weight Loss Plans for Obese Men & Women by Craig Ballantyne the creator of TT
I have an awesome interview of Craig Ballantyne, the creator of Turbulence Training telling us how a person who is obese CAN use TT for their weight loss plans.
Any workout program may work for you if you are overweight because you are doing something. That is the key thing. However, TT was designed ESPECIALLY for those who are busy, who want to cut through the bull and LOSE SOME WEIGHT!!!
And Craig is telling us that YES... TT is perfectly good for those who are obese. But you should STILL get your doctor's OK before getting started (just to be safe) with any exercise program.
I posted the interview on my website here:
