Becoming Neanderthin

Article: Nutrition for Neanderthals

Dr. Cordain believes that if we resemble closely to the diet of the Neanderthals, we will become healthier, taller, faster and stronger. This may be true not because Dr. Cordain is right, but because by Mother Nature's design of evolution and natural selection.

Although, the benefits of the diet helped the Neanderthals immensely, they didn't live as long as modern humans did. The reason would be: harder lifestyle, lack of medical care due to injuries suffered from hunting or tribal wars, among other reasons. It makes you wonder how long they could live if they matched their diet as well as enjoyed the benefits of modern medicines?

You see, the Neanderthals were hunter-gatherers. They ate a diet of meat, nuts, fruit and vegetables. A diet high in protein and monounsaturated fats. With some carbohydrates. In fact, Dr. Cordain says that if we comply to a diet that is 85% in compliance to the diet of the Neaderthal, we should see a vast improvement to our health.

And notice, that the Neanderthal diet does NOT contain sugars or grains. Farming wasn't invented until 10,000 years ago while the Neanderthals became extinct 24,000 years ago. And 10,000 is a blip in human history.

Our DNA is probably very closely related to our ancestors who lived 40,000 years ago but our diet is vastly different. Are we so arrogant to believe that we know better than Mother Nature?

5 Tips To Fight Holiday Weight Gain - Living Well

12/13/2006 - Fitness: 5 Tips To Fight Holiday Weight Gain - Living Well - Chattanoogan.com

You knew these articles were going to come out. Nobody likes a party pooper.

You see... we don't do anything until the pain of not doing something becomes greater than the pain of actually doing that thing.

Make sense to you?

Following this train of though... we won't do anything about our weight until after Christmas and we gain a few pounds from all the delicous holiday foods and treats. At that point, we get so darn angry that we vow a New Year's Resolution to diet until we lose the weight we gained the previous month and half or for the more ambitious ones, until we are skinny and sexy again.

So we start eating salad and other rabbit foods and sweat at the local gym. This usually lasts for a month or so and then we stop. It is just too hard and we don't have the motivation for it anymore and then we get depressed...

If this sounds familiar -- why not make the weight loss a LIFE TIME CHALLENGE.

Make healthy eating and proper exercise a daily goal for each and every day of your life. It is not a foot race. It is a slow, gradual walk in the park.

Didn't the tortoise win the race? Think about it...

Low Fat Snacks Make You Fatter

ABC News: Low-fat Labels Can Lead to Weight Gain

"Reaching for low-fat snacks could actually make you fat, according to a new study published in the Journal of Marketing Research."

I think many people believe that "low-fat" is equal to "low-calorie."

NOTHING further can be the truth. Also, low-fat can put you at more health risks. When you think about it, there is very little difference between the DNA from our ancestors 40,000 years ago and today. And yet, our diet has changed dramatically. Which makes more sense to you, eating a hunter-gatherer diet of meat, vegetables, fruits and nuts or eat to eat a modern diet of high glycemic processed foods that spike your blood sugar?

Dangers of Weight Loss Pills

All Headline News - Weight-Loss Pills A Dangerous And Unregulated Market - December 2, 2006

If you are thinking it is time to lose weight. The first question I would ask you is why do you want to lose weight?

Some folks may say, "I want to look better!" This is a good goal.

Others may say, "I want to be healthier!" I think this is a great goal too.

But losing weight to look better or become healthier does NOT mean cutting corners. Granted, a lot of people are just too damn busy or even not motivated enought to do the work.

So they fall for the weight loss pills or some other scam. As this article mentions, weight loss pill industries are not regulated and could even be dangerous to your health.

So be very careful if you want to go that route...

My best suggestion is to find a moderate exercise and sensible diet plan to consistently lose weight. But this has to be a life change. You just can't just lose weight and then stop because if you go back to your old habits, you better bet that you will gain all the weight again.

So make it a life change! A slim and healthy you!

Is Diet Soda Bad for Weight Loss?

FOX19.com and FOX19 Cincinnati News and Weather WXIX - Diet Soft Drinks May Not Be So Great For Weight Loss

A dietician says that artificial sweetener affects our appetites for up to 12 hours and pushes us to overeat or sneak in an cookie or candy later on.

In spite of the popular opinion that drinking diet soda is helpful when you are trying to lose weight, it actually may do the opposite.

So... if you have stubborn fat that won't go away, why not try banning all artificial sweetener and see what happens?

Some of us dread the Holidays because we tend to gain weight. The good news is the average weight gain over the holiday is only 1 pound. The bad news is that it usually sticks.

What can we do?

We can use better judgment of what we eat and how much of it to eat.

And we can consistently stick to an moderate exercise program that will burn fat permanently and regularly.

Children and obesity

“Approximately 30.3% of children (ages 6 to 11) are overweight and 15.3% are obese. For adolescents (ages 12 to 19), 30.4% are overweight and 15.5% are obese.”

- American Obesity Association

I heard some believe children learn habits from their parents. Good stuff and bad. If mom and dad are kind and thoughtful, it stands to reason, the kids are going to be kind and thoughtful. However, if mom and dad watch the tee vee as soon as they get home from work and eat foods that are not the healthiest in the world, guess what Jack and Jill will do?

Good habits start with the parents. And the kids will follow...
